New hemorrhagic virus, Lujo, surfaces in Africa

A lethal, newly identified hemorrhagic virus that killed four of the five people it infected in September and October 2008 has been given the working title of “Lujo”.

Lujo, a member of the arenavirus family, which currently has 22 known species, was named to reflect its geographic origins: the primary case came from the Zambian capital, Lusaka, and secondary infections occurred in Johannesburg after the patient was transferred to the South African city for treatment.

Dr Lucille Blumberg, deputy director of South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases, told IRIN that humans were most frequently infected with this virus by inhaling dust infected with rodent excreta, or ingestion. The name “Lujo” still has to be approved by “various committees” before it becomes official.

The fifth person to be infected with the Lujo virus - a nurse at Morningside Clinic, Johannesburg - survived after being treated with the antiviral drug, ribavirin, usually prescribed for Lassa fever, a hemorrhagic virus first identified in 1969.

Manipulation: How Financial Markets Really Work

Wall Street’s mantra is that markets move randomly and reflect the collective wisdom of investors. The truth is quite opposite. The government’s visible hand and insiders control markets and manipulate them up or down for profit - all of them, including stocks, bonds, commodities and currencies.

Catherine Austin Fitts describes a "financial coup d’etat, including fraudulent housing (and other bubbles), pump and dump schemes, naked short selling, precious metals price suppression, and active intervention in the markets by the government and central bank" along with insiders.

It’s financial fraud or what former high-level Wall Street insider and former
Assistant HUD Secretary Catherine Austin Fitts calls “pump and dump,” defined as “artificially inflating the price of a stock or other security through promotion, in order to sell at the inflated price,” then profit more on the downside by short-selling. “This practice is illegal under securities law, yet it is particularly common,” and in today’s volatile markets likely ongoing daily.

Why? Because the profits are enormous, in good and bad times, and when carried to extremes like now, Fitts calls it “pump(ing) and dump(ing) of the entire American economy,” duping the public, fleecing trillions from them, and it’s more than just “a process designed to wipe out the middle class. This is genocide (by other means) - a much more subtle and lethal version than ever before perpetrated by the scoundrels of our history texts.”

Fitts explains that much more than market manipulation goes on. She describes a “financial coup d’etat, including fraudulent housing (and other bubbles), pump and dump schemes, naked short selling, precious metals price suppression, and active intervention in the markets by the government and central bank” along with insiders.

It’s a government-business partnership for enormous profits through “legislation, contracts, regulation (or lack of it), financing, (and) subsidies.” More still overall by rigging the game for the powerful, while at the same time harming the public so cleverly that few understand what’s happening.

Market Rigging Mechanisms - The Plunge Protection Team

On March 18, 1989, Ronald Reagan’s Executive Order 12631 created the Working Group on

Financial Markets (WGFM) commonly known as the Plunge Protection Team (PPT). It consisted of the following officials or their designees:
– the President;
– the Treasury Secretary as chairman;
– the Fed chairman;
– the SEC chairman; and
– the Commodity Futures Trading Commission chairman.

Under Sec. 2, its “Purposes and Functions” were stated as follows:

(2) “Recognizing the goals of enhancing the integrity, efficiency, orderliness, and competitiveness of our Nation’s financial markets and maintaining investor confidence, the Working Group shall identify and consider:

(1) the major issues raised by the numerous studies on the events (pertaining to the) October 19, 1987 (market crash and consider) recommendations that have the potential to achieve the goals noted above; and

(2)….governmental (and other) actions under existing laws and regulations….that are appropriate to carry out these recommendations.”

In August 2005, Canada-based Sprott Asset Management (SAM) principals John Embry and Andrew Hepburn headlined their report on the US government’s “surreptitious” market interventions: “Move Over, Adam Smith - The Visible Hand of Uncle Sam” to prevent “destabilizing stock market declines. Comprising key government agencies, stock exchanges and large Wall Street firms,” this group “is significant because the government has never admitted to private-sector membership in the Working Group,” nor is it hinting that manipulation works both ways - to stop or create panic.

“Current mythology holds that (equity) prices rise and fall on the basis of market forces alone. Such sentiments appear to be seriously mistaken….And as official rhetoric continues to toe the free market line, manipulation has become increasingly apparent….with the active participation of selected investment banks and brokerage houses” - the Wall Street giants.

In 2004, Texas Hedge Report principals Steven McIntyre and Todd Stein said “Almost every floor trader on the NYSE, NYMEX, CBOT and CME will admit to having seen the PPT in action in one form or another over the years” - violating the traditional notion that markets move randomly and reflect popular sentiment.
Worse still, according to SAM principals Embry and Hepburn, “the government’s unwillingness to disclose its activities has rendered it very difficult to have a debate on the merits of such a policy,” if there are any.

Further, “virtually no one ever mentions government intervention publicly….Our primary concern is that what apparently started as a stopgap measure may have morphed into a serious moral hazard situation.”

Worst of all, if government and Wall Street collude to pump and dump markets, individuals and small investment firms can get trampled, and that’s exactly what happened in late 2008 and early 2009, with much more to come as the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression plays out over many more months.

That said, the PPT might more aptly be called the PPDT - The Plunge Protection/Destruction Team, depending on which way it moves markets at any time. Investors beware.

Manipulating markets is commonplace and as old as investing. Only the tools are more sophisticated and amounts involved greater. In her book, “Morgan: American Financier,” Jean Strouse explained his role in the Panic of 1907, the result of stock market and real estate speculation that caused a market crash, bank runs, and hysteria. To restore confidence, JP Morgan and the Treasury Secretary organized a group of financiers to transfer funds to troubled banks and buy stocks. At the time, rumors were rampant that they orchestrated the panic for speculative profits and their main goals:

– the 1908 National Monetary Commission to stabilize financial markets as a precursor to the Federal Reserve; and

– the 1910 Jekyll Island meeting where powerful financial figures met in secret for nine days and created the private banking cartel Federal Reserve System, later congressionally established on December 23, 1913 and signed into law by Woodrow Wilson.

Morgan died early that year but profited hugely from the 1907 Panic. It let him expand his steel empire by buying the Tennessee Coal and Iron Company for about $45 million, an asset thought to be worth around $700 million. Today, similar schemes are more than ever common in the wake of the global economic crisis creating opportunities to buy assets cheap by bankers flush with bailout cash. Aided by PPT market rigging, it’s simpler than ever.

Wharton Professor Itay Goldstein and Said Business School and Lincoln College, Oxford University Professor Alexander Guembel discussed price manipulation in their paper titled “Manipulation and the Allocational Role of Prices.” They showed how traders effect prices on the downside through “bear raids,” and concluded:

“We basically describe a theory of how bear raid manipulation works….What we show here is that by selling (a stock or more effectively short-selling it), you have a real effect on the firm. The connection with real value is the new thing….This is the crucial element,” but they claim the process only works on the downside, not driving shares up.

In fact, high-volume program trading, analyst recommendations, positive or negative media reports, and other devices do it both ways.

Also key is that a company’s stock price and true worth can be highly divergent. In other words, healthy or sick firms may be way-over or under-valued depending on market and economic conditions and how manipulative traders wish to price them, short or longer term.

The idea that equity prices reflect true value or that markets move randomly (up or down) is rubbish. They never have and more than ever don’t now.

The Exchange Stabilization Fund (ESF)

The 1934 Gold Reserve Act created the US Treasury’s ESF. Section 7 of the 1944 Bretton Woods Agreements made its operations permanent. As originally established, the Treasury ran the Fund outside of congressional oversight “to keep sharp swings in the dollar’s exchange rate from (disrupting) financial markets” through manipulation.

Its operations now include stabilizing foreign currencies, extending credit lines to foreign governments, and last September to guaranteeing money market funds against losses for up to $50 billion.

In 1995, the Clinton administration used the fund to provide Mexico a $20 billion credit line to stabilize the peso at a time of economic crisis, and earlier administrations extended loans or credit lines to China, Brazil, Ecuador, Iceland and Liberia. The Treasury’s web site also states that:

“By law, the Secretary has considerable discretion in the use of ESF resources. The legal basis of the ESF is the Gold Reserve Act of 1934. As amended in the late 1970s….the Secretary (per) approval of the President, may deal in gold, foreign exchange, and other instruments of credit and securities.”

In other words, ESF is a slush fund for whatever purposes the Treasury wishes, including ones it may not wish to disclose, such as manipulating markets, directing funds to the IMF and providing them with strings to borrowers as the Treasury’s site explains:

“….Treasury has often linked the availability of ESF financing to a borrower’s use of the credit facilities of the IMF, both to support the IMF’s role and to strengthen assurances that there will be timely repayment of ESF financing.”

The Counterparty Risk Management Policy Group (CRMPG)
Established in 1999 in the wake of the Long Term Capital Management (LTCM) crisis, it manipulates markets to benefit giant Wall Street firms and high-level insiders. According to one account, it was to curb future crises by:

– letting giant financial institutions collude through large-scale program trading to move markets up or down as they wish;

– bailing out its members in financial trouble; and

– manipulating markets short or longer-term with government approval at the expense of small investors none the wiser and often getting trampled.

In August 2008, CRMPG III issued a report titled “Containing Systemic Risk: The Road to Reform.” It was deceptive on its face in stating that CRMPG “was designed to focus its primary attention on the steps that must be taken by the private sector to reduce the frequency and/or severity of future financial shocks while recognizing that such future shocks are inevitable, in part because it is literally impossible to anticipate the specific timing and triggers of such events.”

In fact, the “private sector” creates “financial shocks” to open markets, remove competition, and consolidate for greater power by buying damaged assets cheap.

Financial history has numerous examples of preying on the weak, crushing competition, socializing risks, privatizing profits, redistributing wealth upward to a financial oligarchy, creating “tollbooth economies” in debt bondage according to Michael Hudson, and overall getting a “free lunch” at the public’s expense.
CRMPG explains financial excesses and crises this way:

“At the end of the day, (their) root cause….on both the upside and the downside of the cycle is collective human behavior: unbridled optimism on the upside and fear on the downside, all in a setting in which it is literally impossible to anticipate when optimism gives rise to fear or fear gives rise to optimism….”

“What is needed, therefore, is a form of private initiative that will complement official oversight in encouraging industry-wide practices that will help mitigate systemic risk. The recommendations of the Report have been framed with that objective in mind.”

In other words, let foxes guard the henhouse to keep inventing new ways to extract gains (a “free lunch”) in increasingly larger amounts - “in the interest of helping to contain systemic risk factors and promote greater stability.”
Or as Orwell might have said: instability is stability, creating systemic risk is containing it, sloping playing fields are level ones, extracting the greatest profit is sharing it, and what benefits the few helps everyone.

Michel Chossudovsky explains that: “triggering market collapse(s) can be a very profitable undertaking. (Evidence suggests) that the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulators have created an environment which supports speculative transactions (through) futures, options, index funds, derivative securities (and short-selling), etc. (that) make money when the stock market crumbles….foreknowledge and inside information (create golden profit opportunities for) powerful speculators” able to move markets up or down with the public none the wiser.

As a result, concentrated wealth and “financial power resulting from market manipulation is unprecedented” with small investors’ savings, IRAs, pensions, 401ks, and futures being decimated from it.
Deconstructing So-Called “Green Shoots”

Daily the corporate media trumpet them to lull the unwary into believing the global economic crisis is ebbing and recovery is on the way. Not according to longtime market analyst Bob Chapman who calls green shoots “Poison Ivy” and economist Nouriel Roubini saying they’re “yellow weeds” at a time there’s lots more pain ahead.

For many months and in a recent commentary he refers to “the worst financial crisis, economic crisis and recession since the Great Depression….the consensus is now becoming optimistic again and says that we are going to go from minus 6 percent growth to positive growth in the second half of the year….my views are much more bearish….The problems of the financial system are severe. Many banks are still insolvent.”

We’re “piling public debt on top of private debt to socialize the losses; and at some point the back of (the) government(’s) balance sheet is going to break, and if that happens, it’s going to be a disaster.” Short of that, he, Chapman, and others see the risks going forward as daunting. As for the recent stock market rise, they both call it a “sucker’s rally” that will reverse as the US economy keeps contracting and the financial system suffers unexpected or manipulated shocks.

Highly respected market analyst Louise Yamada agrees. As Randall Forsyth reported in the May 25 issue of Barron’s Up and Down Wall Street column:

“It is almost uncanny the degree to which 2002-08 has tracked 1932-38, ‘Yamada writes in her latest note to clients.’ ” Her “Alternate Hypothesis” compares this structural bear market to 1929-42:

– “the dot-com collapse parallels the Great Crash and its aftermath,” followed by the 2003-07 recovery, similar to 1933-37;
– then the late 2008 - early March 2009 collapse tracks a similar 1937-38 trajectory, after which a strong rally followed much like today;

– then in November 1938, the market dropped 22% followed by a 26% rise and a series of further ups and downs - down 28%, up 23%, down 16%, up 13%, and a final 29% decline ending in 1942;

– from the 1938 high (”analogous to where we are now,” she says), stock prices fell 41% to a final bottom.

Are we at one today as market touts claim? No according to Yamada - top-ranked among her peers in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 when she worked at Citigroup’s Smith Barney division. Since 2005, she’s headed her own independent research company.

She says structural bear markets typically last 13 - 16 years so this one has a long way to go before “complet(ing) the repair process.” She calls the current rebound “a bungee jump,” very typical of bear markets. Numerous ones occurred during the Great Depression, 8 alone from 1929 - 1932, some deceptively strong.

Expect market manipulators today to produce similar price action going forward - to enrich themselves while trampling on the unwary, well-advised to protect their dollars from becoming quarters or dimes.

Children, Unlamented Victims of Bush War Crimes

Torture has received the most attention among the many war crimes of the Bush administration. But those who support Bush’s pursuit of the “war on terror” have not been impressed by recriminations over torture. Worse than torture are the murders of at least 50 prisoners in Abu Ghraib, Afghanistan, and Guantánamo, but again the hard-hearted are unimpressed when those whom they perceive as terrorists receive illegal extrajudicial capital punishment.

The case for abusing children, however, is more difficult to support. The best kept secret of the Bush’s war crimes is that thousands of children have been imprisoned, tortured, and otherwise denied rights under the Geneva Conventions and related international agreements. Yet both Congress and the media have strangely failed to identify the very existence of child prisoners as a war crime. In the Islamic world, however, there is no such silence. Indeed, the prophet Mohammed was the first to counsel warriors not to harm innocent children.

The first example of war crimes against children, which are well documented, occurred during the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, when the children’s hospital in Kabul was bombed, its patients thereby murdered, contrary to the Red Cross Convention of 1864. Other children were killed as “collateral damage” during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, contrary to the Geneva Convention ban on indiscriminate killing in wartime, though numbers of dead are unknown. During spring 2004, during the assault on Falluja, Iraq, some 300 children, including peaceful demonstrators, were killed. Their dead bodies were filmed live on al-Jazeera Television throughout the Arabic-speaking world.

In 2008, the Bush administration reported to the UN-assisted Committee on the Rights of the Child that the United States from 2002 had detained 2,400 children in Iraq and 100 in Afghanistan, though another source claims that the figure for Afghanistan is at least 800 boys, aged 10 to 15, from whom as many as 64 were sent to Guantánamo, of which there were 21 as of May 2008. That month, the Committee upbraided the United States for charging minors with war crimes instead of treating underage persons as victims of war. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s two children, aged 7 and 9, were separately detained to intimidate him to confess.

While detained, several children have been brutalized and tortured. At Abu Ghraib, American guards videotaped Iraqi male prisoners raping young boys but took no action to stop the offenses. Perhaps the worst incident at Abu Ghraib involved a girl aged 12 or 13 who screamed for help to her brother in an upper cell while stripped naked and beaten. Iraqi journalist Suhaib Badr-Addin al-Baz, who heard the girl’s screams, also witnessed an ill 15-year-old who was forced to run up and down Abu Ghraib with two heavy cans of water and beaten whenever he stopped. When he finally collapsed, guards stripped and poured cold water on him. Finally, a hooded man was brought in. When unhooded, the boy realized that the man was his father, who doubtless was being intimidated into confessing something upon sight of his brutalized son.

While General Hamid Zabar was being questioned in Iraq, his interrogators decided to arrest his frail 16-year-old son in order to produce a confession. After soldiers found the boy, he was stripped, drenched with mud and water, and exposed to the cold January night while bound and driven about in the open back of a truck. When presented naked to his father, he was shivering due to hypothermia, clearly needing medical attention.

At least 25 war crimes refer specifically to child prisoners. Among the crimes are the arbitrary transfer out of their home countries, leaving their parents to wonder whether they were dead. When their locations were later revealed, parents were not allowed to contact them, even through the mail. And family members knew nothing of Hassin Bin Attash’s extraordinary rendition experience in Jordan or Ahmad Bashir’s disappearance for two years in a secret prison.

Children have been incarcerated in the same quarters as adults, contrary to the Geneva Convention. Subjected to solitary confinement, they are denied educational and recreational opportunities. Indeed, one attorney was not allowed to give his client (Omar Khadr) a copy of “Lord of the Rings” or play dominoes with him; another has been forbidden to supply his client (Mohammed Jawad) articles from the Internet. After Captain James Yee left Guantánamo on September 10, 2003, no Muslim chaplain has ever replaced him, so they have not been provided appropriate religious education.

Meanwhile, the authorities have refused to investigate or prosecute those who have abused children, and there have been no programs established to prevent prison mistreatment or to assist in their resulting post-traumatic stress. They have been denied legal counsel and a statement of reasons for their confinement upon arrival in prison, held far beyond the “speedy trial” requirement under the Geneva Conventions, coerced into confessions that may be false, and denied available exculpatory evidence, including witnesses.

In 2003, Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao gave a speech on behalf of the need to rehabilitate child soldiers from Burundi, Colombia, El Salvador, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, and Uganda. While she spoke, several children were being abused at Guantánamo. The most famous, Mohammed Jawad and Omar Khadr, are still being held for trial at Guantánamo.

Omar Khadr’s videotaped plea for his mommy and claims of torture has been seen on television worldwide. While still wounded from battle in Afghanistan, Omar was interrogated many times, sometimes while hooded with dogs barking near him, so he confessed to stop the pain from his wounds. During interrogation at Guantánamo, Omar was shackled to the floor in stress positions until he soiled himself. His bound body was twice used as a mop to wipe his own urine mixed with pine oil after which he was refused a shower and a change of clothing. He has also been administered a brutal beating while on a hunger strike, threatened with rape, and denied pain medication.

There is some puzzlement over the reason for imprisoning Mohammad Jawad. Is it because, while at an American-run prison in Afghanistan in 2002, he has claimed that he saw Americans murdering inmates? At Guantánamo, to deprive him of sleep in order to force some sort of confession, he was shifted from one cell to another more than 100 times during two weeks in May 2004, and he remains in solitary confinement today. When he showed up in court in 2008, he was the first to wear leg shackles. During his arraignment, the judge asked him whether he accepted the assigned military defense attorney as his lawyer. After replying in the negative, the judge asked whether he knew another lawyer. His reply to the Kafkaesque inquiry was “Since I don’t know any lawyer, how can I have them represent me? . . . I should be given freedom so that I can find a lawyer.” His request to hunt for a lawyer was then denied.

The mistreatment of children is something not so funny that has been neglected on the road to investigations of and calls for prosecution of those responsible for torture. George W. Bush has never been asked about the abuse of children in American-run prisons in the “war on terror.” It is high time for Bush and others to be held accountable for what is arguably the most egregious of all their war crimes—the abuse and death of children, who should never have been arrested in the first place.

There are different levels of brainwashing children, the most extreme of which is Scorched Earth Alienation.

When the ex tries to poison the relationship with not only the other parent but with that parent’s sisters, brothers, father– the entire family tree essentially, this is called Scorched Earth Alienation.

In my case, my son’s mother tries to deny him a normal relationship with his own half-sister, his Daddy (me), his grandpa (denied him an exchange– which I promptly filed a motion with the Court), and cousins. These are largely due to bogus sex abuse claims, many of which come from government bureaucrats. Once a family is destroyed by these perverse methods, the children are often subjected to mass drug "therapies" which serve to emotionally dumb-down and alienate the child even further.

She’s not just satisfied with getting him to hate his own Daddy, she’s going after the entire family tree. It’s truly sad… I hope your situation isn’t nearly as far-reaching as mine.

So when it comes time to discuss with your lawyer or the jury your plight, use this term– it’s perfect for what the malicious behavior it’s describing.

Insane Thug Cops Attack Emergency Paramedic

All across the country, cops are attacking people for not responding quick enough to barked commands or for not groveling in deference to their thuggish authority. Insane and violent cops have been caught repeatedly on tape and video assaulting non-violent citizens, tasering and even murdering them (Infowars and Prison Planet are replete with such stories).

In a recent incident, Oklahoma cops pulled over an EMT vehicle and assaulted a paramedic:

PADEN, Oklahoma — An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper and a paramedic were caught on tape scuffling Sunday while a patient was being taken to the hospital.

The fight happened on Highway 62, near Paden, after a OHP and first responders argued over a close call on the road.

OHP alleges that one of the paramedics on the video assaulted the trooper, but the assault was not caught on tape.

But after OHP troopers finished their official business, they pulled the Creek Nation ambulance over. One of the troopers chided Paul for failing to yield.
Once the ambulance was pulled over, Davis pulled out his phone and shot video of the scene.

Watch the full video of the altercation between the trooper and first responders.
According to the OHP, the paramedics assaulted the trooper just before the fight broke out.

“It didn’t look like it was being handled very well, at least form the tape I saw from the troopers’ standpoint,” said NEWS 9 Legal Analyst Irven Box.
The entire scene, including the alleged assault was captured on dash cam video and has not been released.

The Okfuskee County District Attorney’s office is reviewing all of the footage and could file criminal charges against the paramedic by the end of the week.

However, even as this atrocity was designed to be "too disturbing" to be revealed to the American people, making it the "perfect crime," our Founding Fathers anticipated such treason by establishing real courts based upon reason and not emotion. Emotion can be programmed through terror to build near-universal intellectual blindness. Real science and reason can defeat this brainwashing.

CIA Experiments with Mind Control on Children

The CIA mind-control apparatus has been well known since 1975,
when 10 large boxes of documents were released pursuant to
Freedom of Information Act requests.

Several good books were then written on the subject of the CIA
program known as MK-ULTRA. Officially spanning ten years from 19
52-62, MK-ULTRA involved the use of LSD on unwitting military
and civilian subjects in the United States. LSD and more
powerful compounds were given under duress as brainwashing and
truth serum drugs. The program's aim was to find drugs which
would irresistibly bring out deep confessions or wipe a subject'
s mind clean and program him or her as "a robot agent."

In experimental test situations, people were given acid without
their knowledge, then interrogated under bright lights with
doctors sitting in the background taking notes. Threats would
be made. The test subjects were told that their LSD "downer
trips" would be extended indefinitely if they refused to reveal
their closely-guarded military secrets. The people being
interrogated in this way were CIA employees, U.S. military
personnel and, abroad, agents suspected of working for the other
side in the Cold War. Long-term severe debilitation and several
documented deaths resulted. Much, much more could be said about
MK-ULTRA.

None of this prepared people for the explosive testimony made on
March 15, 1995, in Washington, D.C., before the President's
Committee on Radiation, however. In unpublicized sessions, New
Orleans therapist Valerie Wolf introduced two of her patients
who had uncovered memories of being part of extensive CIA
brainwashing programs as young children (in one case, starting
at age seven). Their brainwashing included torture, rape,
electroshock, powerful drugs, hypnosis and death threats.
According to their testimony, the CIA then induced amnesia to
prevent their recalling these terrifying sessions.

Both Wolf and her patients stated that they recovered the
memories of this CIA program without regression or hypnosis
techniques. In other words, these patients spontaneously
discovered this information about themselves and their pasts.

Although the committee was mainly concerned with radiation, they
permitted Valerie and her patients to testify because,
astonishingly, several doctors who had administered the mind-
control experiments had also been identified by other Americans
secretly exposed to radiation. Apparently there was a crossover.

Prominent names surfaced in the March 15 testimony: Richard
Helms, former head of the CIA, Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, who ran MK-
ULTRA and Dr. John Gittinger, Gottlieb's protege. These men
and others were directly accused of participating in grisly mind-
control efforts on children.

Predictably, this testimony received no media attention.

I now have it all, including many pages submitted to the
committee that will likely never be released as part of their
final report. Only a small percentage of the pages were read
aloud at the hearing. Included are corroborating statements
from other therapists around the country and several of their
patients. I have now released all of this testimony as a book,
U.S. Government Mind-Control Experiments On Children.

When the sickening shock starts to wear off, deeply disturbing
questions flood one's mind: just what was this CIA program? How
extensive was it? What was its purpose?

From what I have been able to discover so far, many American
children, as well as children from Mexico and South America,
were used over a period of about 40 years, starting around 1948.
In fact, the program may still be going on. Doctors and agents
who administered it wanted to obtain control over the minds of
these children, ostensibly to create superagents who wouldn't
remember even what missions they carried out, because of
hypnotically induced amnesia (which could be removed by their
controllers and reinstalled at will). (1)

Children were trained as sex agents, for example, with the job
of blackmailing prominent Americans -- primarily politicians,
businessmen and educators. A great deal of filming was done for
this purpose. Eventually, people from the inner core of the CIA
program filmed each other, and some of the centers where
children were used as sex agents got out of control and turned
into CIA-operated sex rings.

Some children were considered expendable and simply murdered.

One person who states that he was in this program as a child
said, off the record:

"They tried out their brainwashing techniques on the kids from
Mexico and South America. They were considered expendable. But
on another echelon of the program, they went after the best and
the brightest American kids. Making perfect agents to combat
the Soviets wasn't, I don't think, their ultimate objective. I
can't remember what that was."

At this point, I made a suggestion:

"Well, if they were choosing the best and brightest, maybe they
figured these kids would one day rise to important positions in
the society, and they wanted to gain long-term control over them,
so they would be under their thumb, so they could tap them at
will -- a way of controlling the future society."

"Maybe," he said. "The Nazis gained control over the
intelligentsia in Germany. That was a very key step in their
dominance. That was the first thing they did".

"This smells very much like a Nazi program in the U.S.," I
said. "I don't mean all the controllers were German, but the
style of it, the insanity."

He said, "They brought over a lot of Nazi doctors after the war
and not just to build rockets -- for a lot of projects."

Other people who said that they had been used as children in the
program remember that doctors with German accents were
definitely present at the sessions. One therapist, who shared
this information informally with colleagues around the country,
states that, so far, the oldest person she has heard of who was
in the program is now 52; the youngest is now nine.

Since a number of people who were brainwashed, tortured and
drugged in these experiments try to resolve their experiences in
therapy, psychiatrists and other professional therapists are
hearing these stories. They are told, for example, that CIA
controllers sometimes dressed up in Satanic costumes to further
traumatize the children, also providing a cover that wouldn't be
believed if the children ever talked.

It is worth noting that there is a movement to discredit these "
recovered" memories, and the most prominent group, the False
Memory Syndrome Foundation (FMSF), has several board members
with CIA or military-intelligence connections -- including the
notorious Dr. Louis "Jolly" West of UCLA, who tried to
establish a center for "the study of violence" at the university
in the 1970s. This center's specialty would have been
psychosurgery, a horrendous melting of brain connections,
supposedly to curb people's "violent tendencies."

FMSF maintains that a person always remembers abuse done to him
or her, and therefore any new recovery of it in therapy is false
and must have been fabricated through misleading suggestions by
the therapist. While it is certainly true that such inducement
happens in therapy, the blanket statement that all recovered
memory is invented is unsubstantiated.

In a written statement to Dr. Wolf that was included in her
testimony to the president's committee, well-known researcher
and psychiatrist, Colin Ross said,

"Published articles in my files include descriptions of
administration of 150 mcg of LSD to children age 5-10 years on
a daily basis for days, weeks, months, and in a few cases even
years. Neurosurgeons at Tulane, Yale, and Harvard did extensive
research on brain electrode implants with intelligence funding,
and combined brain implants with Large numbers of drugs
including hallucinogens."

Ross based his report on his more than 20 years of investigating
CIA mind control.

Chris De Nicola, one of Dr. Wolf's patients who testified
before the president's committee, named her controller as a Dr.
Greene, a name reported by several other mind-control subjects.
It may well be that this name was a cover used by various CIA
and military-contracted experimenter-torturers. Here is a quote
from her testimony:

"[Dr. Greene] used me in radiation experiments both for the
purpose of determining the effects of radiation on various
parts of my body and to terrorize me as an additional trauma in
the mind-control experiments. [She was eight years old.]

"The rest of the experiments took place in Tucson, Arizona, out
in the desert. I was taught how to pick locks, be secretive,
use my photographic memory to remember things and a technique to
withhold information by repeating numbers to myself. [She is
obviously talking about being trained as an agent.]

"Dr. Greene moved on to wanting me to kill dolls that looked
like real children. I stabbed a doll with a spear once after
being severely tortured, but the next time I refused. He used
many techniques but as I got older I resisted more and more.

He often tied me down in a cage, which was near his office.
Between 1972 and 1976 he and his assistants were sometimes
careless and left the cage unlocked. Whenever physically
possible, I snuck -into his office and found files with reports
and memos addressed to CIA and military personnel. Included in
these files were project, subproject, subject and experiment
names with some code numbers for radiation mind-control
experiments which I have submitted in my written documentation.
I was caught twice and Dr. Greene tortured me ruthlessly with
electric shock, drugs, spinning on a table, putting shots in my
stomach, in my back, dislocating my joints and hypnotic
techniques to make me feel crazy and suicidal..."

Is there a precedent for this kind of sadistic treatment by CIA
and military personnel? Indeed there is. Here is a quote from
the introduction to my book, U.S. Government Mind-Control
Experiments On Children. It contains information from reliable
published sources; such as The Search for the Manchurian
Candidate, by John Marks (2), Acid Dreams, by Martin Lee (3) and
The Mind Manipulators, by Alan Scheflin (4). In part, these
authors derived their information on the CIA and MK-ULTRA from
the ten boxes of information released suddenly in 1975 by the
agency in response to Freedom of Information Act requests:

"Dr. Robert Heath of Tulane University, as early as 1955,
working for the Army, gave patients-LSD while he had electrodes
implanted deep inside their brains.

"Canadian researcher, Dr. Ewan Cameron, under long-term CIA
contract, attempted to depattern, and reprogram his psychiatric
patients' personalities wholesale. He started with 15 to 65
days of 'sleep therapy,' during which a patient was kept under
nearly 24 hours a day, through the administration of cocktails
of Thorazine, Nembutal, Seconal, Veronal, and Phenergam.
Throughout this sleep period, the patient would be awakened two
or three times a day for electroshock treatments, given at an
intensity 20-40 times the 'normal' convulsion-producing strength.

"In the mid-1950's, Paul Hoch, M.D., a man who would become
Commissioner of Mental Hygiene for the State of New York, then
a laborer in the field for the CIA, gave a 'pseudoneurotic
schizophrenic' patient mescaline. The patient had a not-
unfamiliar heaven-and-hell journey on the compound. But Hoch
followed this up with a transorbital leucotomy...Hoch also gave
a patient LSD, and a local anesthetic, and then proceeded to
remove pieces of cerebral cortex, asking at various moments
whether the patient's perceptions were changing."

Claudia Mullin, the other of Dr. Wolf's patients who testified
before the President's Committee on Radiation, said her
experiences with CIA mind-control experiences began when she
was seven years old:

"In 1958, 1 was to be tested, they told me, by some important
doctors coming from a place called the 'Society' [the Human
Ecology Society, a CIA front]. I was told to cooperate; answer
any of their questions. Then, since the test 'might hurt,' I
would be given 'shots, x-rays, and a few jolts of electricity.'
I was instructed not to look at anyone's face too hard and to
ignore names,' as this was 'a very secret project' but to be
brave an all those things would help me forget...

"A Dr. John Gittinger tested me and Dr. Cameron gave me the
shocks and Dr. Greene the x-rays...By the time I left to go
home, just like every time from then on, I would recall nothing
of my tests or the different doctors. I would only remember
whatever explanations Dr. Robert G. Heath [of Tulane Medical
School] gave me for the odd bruises, needle marks, burns on my
head and fingers and even the genital soreness. I had no reason
to believe otherwise. Already, they had begun to control my
mind!

"The next year, I was sent to a place in Maryland called Deep
Creek Cabins to learn how to 'sexually please men.' Also, I was
taught how to coerce them into talking about themselves. It was
Richard Helms (Deputy Director of the CIA), Dr. Gottlieb,
Captain George White and Morse Allen, who all planned on filming
as many high government and agency officials and heads of
academic institutions and foundations as possible...I was to
become a regular little 'spy' for them, after that summer,
eventually entrapping many unwitting men, including themselves,
all with the use of a hidden camera. I was only nine when this
kind of sexual humiliation began."

Captain George White was a notorious agent for the CIA. He set
up a brothel in San Francisco in the 1960s and, using hidden
cameras, filmed men having sex with prostitutes. The men's
drinks were "spiked" with LSD. In 1950, Morse Allen, another
important CIA, man, was appointed head of Project BLUEBIRD,
another CIA mind-control program.

Ms. Mullin states that she was adopted when she was two years
old. By the time she reached seven she had already been abused
extensively by her mother. Her mother apparently turned her
over for "testing" to CIA-connected people and Claudia then
entered a 27-year period of what can only be called enslavement.
Claudia states that she has been monitored, that she is still
monitored and watched by agency related people, including a
medical doctor. Now living in New Orleans, she has given
information to local police authorities about her situation.
In her testimony to the president's committee, Claudia remarked,

"Although the process of recalling these atrocities is certainly
not an easy task, nor is it without some danger to myself and my
family...I feel the risk is worth taking."

Claudia's therapist, Dr. Wolf, has written to the president's
committee,

"To the best of my knowledge, [Claudia] has read nothing about
mind-control or CIA covert operations. Since she decided to
listen carefully and remember as much as she could about
conversations among the researchers, her memories are
extraordinarily complete. I have sent written copies of
memories to Dr. Alan Scheflin [author of The Mind Manipulators]
for validation and he has confirmed that she has knowledge of
events and people that are not published anywhere, that some of
her memories contain new information and that some are already
known and published. Some of her memories have been confirmed
by family members. She has also shown me old scrapbooks where
she wrote notes to remember what was happening to her and hid
the notes under pictures in the scrapbook."

I spoke with Alan Scheflin in May of this year. He said he had
found one piece of information Claudia had mentioned in her
recollections that had no precedent in published material. It
involved a connection between two government researchers.

This is just the tip of the iceberg on the 130 pages of
testimony given before the President's Committee on Radiation,
and it is also just the beginning of a history that will
undoubtedly widen in the coming months and years. Dr. Wolf
told me that when word got around she was going to testify
before the president's committee, she was contacted by about 40
therapists "in just the 10 days leading up to my trip to
Washington." The therapists had heard similar CIA mind-control
stories from their own patients. Many of these professionals
are afraid to go on the record about their patients' stories, as
censure from their professional societies is a reality. The
political mood these days is not conducive to granting an aura
of credibility to revelations of CIA brainwashing.

So what else is new?

A new article in U.S. News & World Report quotes a couple of psychologists, one sociologist and one historian to argue that people who question the government's version of 9/11 are prone to false thinking.

Initially, remember that, while there are many honorable psychologists and psychiatrists, psychologists helped to create the U.S. torture program, and actively participated in it.

Also, psychologists - such as Freud's nephew Edward Bernays - have been central to propaganda efforts for a century. See also this and this.

Moreover, many mental health professionals have concluded that the official version of 9/11 is false, and that those who believe the official version suffer from emotional problems or defense mechanisms. For example:

Finally, it should be obvious that the opinions of mental health professionals are only as sound as their knowledge. For example, a mental health professional in 1640 would likely have labeled Galileo crazy for saying that the Earth orbits around the Sun.

More importantly, a German psychologist who heard from a patient in 1933 - when Hitler started consolidating power in Germany - that Hitler was a dangerous fascist who would launch a world war, try to take over the world and kill millions would likely be labeled as delusional.

Just as with any field, the opinions of mental health professional are only as good as their knowledge.

Indeed, even the 9/11 Commissioners themselves now say that they don't believe the government's version of 9/11. For example:

The Commission's co-chairs said that the CIA (and likely the White House) "obstructed our investigation"

Indeed, they said that the 9/11 Commissioners knew that military officials misrepresented the facts to the Commission, and the Commission considered recommending criminal charges for such false statements (free subscription required)

9/11 Commissioner Bob Kerrey said that "There are ample reasons to suspect that there may be some alternative to what we outlined in our version . . . We didn't have access . . . ."

9/11 Commissioner Timothy Roemer said "We were extremely frustrated with the false statements we were getting"

9/11 Commissioner Max Cleland resigned from the Commission, stating: "It is a national scandal"; "This investigation is now compromised"; and "One of these days we will have to get the full story because the 9-11 issue is so important to America. But this White House wants to cover it up"

The Senior Counsel to the 9/11 Commission (John Farmer) - who led the 9/11 staff's inquiry - said "At some level of the government, at some point in time...there was an agreement not to tell the truth about what happened". He also said "I was shocked at how different the truth was from the way it was described .... The tapes told a radically different story from what had been told to us and the public for two years.... This is not spin. This is not true."

Given that even the 9/11 Commissioners themselves don't believe the government's version of 9/11 any more, is a mental health professional who believes the official version really saying that the entire 9/11 Commission is delusional?

U.S. Military Investigator Confirms Women and Children Were Raped At Abu Ghraib

It only took five years, but the mainstream media has finally acknowledged the truth behind why certain photos and videos from the infamous Abu Ghraib prison camp have been blocked from public release - they show U.S. soldiers and other prison guards raping female detainees as well as children.

In an interview with the London Telegraph, Major General Antonio Taguba, the former army officer who conducted an inquiry into the Abu Ghraib jail in Iraq, confirmed the details of his original army report, that the unreleased photos showed rape and sexual abuse of women and minors.

“At least one picture shows an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner while another is said to show a male translator raping a male detainee,” reports the Telegraph, adding, “Further photographs are said to depict sexual assaults on prisoners with objects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube.”

Taguba also verified the credibility of eyewitness statements from other detainees that described an American-Egyptian male translator in uniform raping teenage boys.
Among the graphic statements, which were later released under US freedom of information laws, is that of Kasim Mehaddi Hilas in which he says: “I saw [name of a translator] ******* a kid, his age would be about 15 to 18 years. The kid was hurting very bad and they covered all the doors with sheets. Then when I heard screaming I climbed the door because on top it wasn’t covered and I saw [name] who was wearing the military uniform, putting his **** in the little kid’s ***…. and the female soldier was taking pictures.”

“These pictures show torture, abuse, rape and every indecency,” Taguba told the Telegraph.

Taguba’s confirmation that the photos depict rape mean that President Obama could only have been lying when he claimed, “I want to emphasize that these photos that were requested in this case are not particularly sensational, especially when compared to the painful images that we remember from Abu Ghraib.”

As we reported last week, such horrors have been on the record for years, yet corporate media coverage of the Abu Ghraib scandal still frames the entire issue in the context that the “abuse” consisted merely of college fraternity-style humiliation and stacking prisoners in human pyramids.

In reality, the very worst of the torture has never been seen and it includes raping women and children, as well as brutally beating detainees to death.
Further details were also made public by New Yorker investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, who in July 2004 told an ACLU conference,
“Some of the worst things that happened you don’t know about, okay?” said Hersh.

“Videos, there are women there. Some of you may have read that they were passing letters out, communications out to their men. This is at Abu Ghraib … The women were passing messages out saying ‘Please come and kill me, because of what’s happened’ and basically what happened is that those women who were arrested with young boys, children in cases that have been recorded. The boys were sodomized with the cameras rolling. And the worst above all of that is the soundtrack of the boys shrieking that your government has. They are in total terror. It’s going to come out.”

Following his refusal to release the unseen photos, the ACLU charged that President Obama “has essentially become complicit with the torture that was rampant during the Bush years by being complicit in its coverup.” The Obama administration has also sought to protect intelligence officials involved in torture from prosecution at every turn.

The most advanced methods of child development, naturalistic parenting, is being demonized and destroyed by children and youth authorities so that brainwashing of "authority" goes toward full government manipulation. Europeans are not so naive. Hitler knew that bigotry programming was deeply irrational and emotion based. His assault on reason is well known in Europe as an assault on the parental duty. Sexual repression comes from the slave-making arts and Hitler's eugenicists tried very hard to legitimatize and normalize sexual learned ignorance in children. Ignorant Americans now routinely depict such abused children as "innocent." Nothing is further from the truth! These children are being made "programmable" for powerful subconscious programming via government-themed mass media. They are then programmed for a powerful form of neurosis where the "Illuminati" and the media itself are programmed as top-down "parental" entities and this programming is extremely unnatural and harmful to the individual. This brainwashing of top-down authority successfully reverses the power structure of our Constitution, destroying millions of U.S. families. Parents are no longer respected with basic parental and civil rights, all due to the tyranny of Nazi Mind control brought to the U.S. by over 600 Nazi agents. It only serves wrongful government. Such wrongful programming of children often results in hysteria which is now routinely depicted as "sex abuse" by parents. This is a basic Nazi sex scam.

drunkenness, unbounded use of alcohol and drugs with vague homosexual

children and broad use of Mind Control devices on children. Alfred Hitchcock was a product of Tavistock, British Intelligence, and began the entire Horror genre which deeply programs and "depatterns" the mind in regard to psychic terror, sex and knives killing fertility symbols. Most major horror films began with PsyOps Operations which blend sex and death programming for eugenics and Pentagon military conditioning and recruiting. Paramount Studios specializes in sexing-up top-down military programming for children. Horror films like The Exorcist were produced by Air Force PsyOps experts. This programs deep sexual taboos and terror with fertility symbols in juxtaposition with the "parental protectors" who are usually programmed as government agents. Ian Flemming worked with J.Edgar Hoover to program FBI agents as "parental." Most CSI-styled programming now routinely employs horror to program the parental government and demonize the individual citizen.

Where governments brainwash their children, the most enlightened of families will be targeted first, just as in Nazi Germany. Subconscious slavery requires the destruction of the historically all-important parental duty. This is where "mental hygiene" is used to fully invert the idea of reality deep inside of children. These cases become critical for exposing a massive brainwashing fraud. This is because the enlightened will represent the highest threat and will in fact be a substantial threat to wrongful government. Therefore, they are subject to the most draconian repression. Where such brainwashing of children is viewed as illegal under the Constitution, such wrongful government will employ deep programming which will be smothered in layers of deception to hide its true source. Foreign subsidiaries of intelligence operations like Tavistock will be paid billions of dollars to brainwash your children into a totalitarian mythic system which desexes them later and later into their development. This Nazification process is heralded as normal and necessary just about everywhere except where elite parents demand the truth. Nazified bureaucrats and local "authorities" in the vast non-elite world will enslave those children whose parents do not conform with this brainwashing. Mass media will both advance brainwashing and omit critical information which will expose it as a massive fraud. This is in fact how our current mass media system, controlled by the Bohemian Grove, actually operates.

Deep programming is the hypnotist's realm and not the realm of honest government. The Atomic Age has advanced the war-logic that honest government is too naive and dangerous, as lesser evils are perceived as necessary to prevent greater evils. Therefore your government warped into an age of Mind Control under a war-logic of totalitarian deception, where all power is covert. The problem is, Mind Control is no lesser evil. It fully inverts our core value system and brings back absolute slavery. It builds a totalitarian mythic system based upon irrational fear and disinformation which becomes the beast. What you hear, see, smell and taste is theatre and theatre is a hammer for the elite mind programmer. Over generations, Nazi Mind Control was secretly pounding away and transforming a good American culture into a Nazi war machine and the evidence is all around you.

All that is required of wrongful government is that it dominates and themes this theatre for its own purposes. Such theatre becomes so seductive over generations, that you will not see the forest for the trees. It becomes an all-consuming mythic system which serves the elite mind programmer. If you grow up in the propaganda factory, you will not see it as propaganda, it simply becomes part of your religion which must inevitably destroy that religion. It is a cancer on your Constitution as well. Those held in ignorance of this wrongful power system become the very marionettes who actively advance it. Your government employs the "Illuminati" to do brainwashing missions for which they themselves are ignorant and this mass mesmerism requires the "programmable child" who is denied the reality principle from real parents.

We found in the mid-1980s that many or most Americans were intellectually blind to many areas of their lives regarding sexuality. This intellectual blindness is deliberately programmed into those children who are brainwashed. But in modern society, who does intellectual blindness regarding sex really serve? The death cult at the top of government which may have invented AIDS?

In such a perverse and inverted society, those Freudian experts in child development in Europe would be placed firmly in the crosshairs as "sex predators" in a place like Bedford County. This is due to the fact that redneck governments are fully inverted to serve the elite power system, not the Constitution. The parental duty will be fully repressed and full slavery of children becomes the norm, because the Constitution has been fully violated. Yet most Americans are aware on the subconscious level that their media "Illuminati" are con-artists, not deserving the role of false parents. These Americans can be de-programmed in a real court of law.

Understand that World War II demonstrated the profound power of Mind Control over a targeted population. The brainwashing of American P.O.W.s in Korea also proved the power of these methods. Those Americans like Eisenhower were fully aware of its inherent threats to the U.S. and chose to counter massive Soviet Alpha-level propaganda programming through use of Nazi mind controllers and mass media. The established science of psychology indicates that the conscious mind is not primary. The unconscious mind is primary. This fact makes subconscious programming all-powerful in the wrong hands. This is incredibly important to understand, as the subconscious mind is not rational and can be fully programmed through basic and common Alpha-level media en mass. The unconscious mind then dominates the person's core belief system. This "personal unconscious" layer of the mind includes all experiences which can be programmed. Such programming is extremely powerful over the long term, as this region of the mind stores this information as "literal," even information coming from pure "entertainment." Television was specifically designed by government to function at the perfect hypnotic flicker rate for this mass programming function.

Your secret federal government has been well aware of the power of Alpha-level Mind Control since at least World War II, but remains suspiciously silent on this issue. This silence is but one of many indicators that your government has chosen to dominate Alpha-level media through the empowerment of the 1947 National Security Act, a fatally flawed Act of treachery against our Constitution.

Most eugenics activity in the U.S. today functions "underground" as Alpha-level programming of mass media.

Edwin Black's War Against the Weak was well known before the book ever hit the bookstores. Not only did it receive a large amount of advance publicity from the publisher and the author, but it had already become a cause célèbre among historians of science working in the field of the history of eugenics, many of whom had been contacted by Black during the course of the book's preparation. It was billed as a far-reaching revision of our understanding of eugenics that would “tear away the thickets of mystery surrounding the eugenics movement around the world.” The author's central thesis is that Nazi racial hygiene and its ultimate manifestations in the Holocaust were imported lock, stock and barrel from the USA, and that, indeed, it was US ruling elites who hatched the idea of creating a master Aryan race by selective breeding and then passed it along to the Nazis. More specifically, Black argues that the Rockefeller Foundation (RF) and the Carnegie Institution of Washington (CIW) funded much of the American-based movement, both at home and abroad, and so sat in the driver's seat guiding Nazi racial hygienists along their fateful path.

I am not opposed by nature to what are often called (pejoratively by historians) 'conspiracy theories'—meaning the claims that certain developments in history are planned or orchestrated by groups, usually highly privileged elites, who work behind the scenes. I am prepared to recognize that special-interest groups, particularly those who have held or still hold the reins of national and international capital, make plans and fund all sorts of movements and operations that they think will be to their benefit. Long ago, I even made a claim of this sort to account for why the CIW and Harriman family interests would have taken up the funding of eugenics in the USA in the early decades of the twentieth century (Genetics 79: 29–45 (1975).). So, it is not Black's persuasion that 'big-money' interests in the USA supported eugenics for class-based interests that bothers me; it is the claim that interest in eugenical theory and its use to create a master Aryan race were developed primarily in the USA and exported to Germany as the foundation for later Nazi racial hygiene. Such a claim ignores the results of a whole host of recent, detailed and sophisticated historical studies that trace the origin of eugenics movements in a wide range of countries, especially Germany and the USA.

Black's book covers much of the ground that has now become familiar through a wide variety of scholarly, as well as popular, writings on the history of eugenics: its first formulation in the writings of Francis Galton; the concern, around the turn of the twentieth century, about racial degeneration, both in Europe and the USA; the incorporation of Mendelian genetics into much of eugenical thought (especially in the USA); and the role of eugenicists (particularly in the USA before 1933) in passing legislation legalizing compulsory sterilization, immigration restriction of those deemed genetically unfit, and the reaffirmation or strengthening of existing anti-miscegenation laws. Black is correct in pointing out the important role of major US philanthropies, such as the RF and CIW (also the Harriman family and the Kellogg Race Betterment Foundation), in funding many eugenical activities. The CIW had funded Charles B. Davenport's Station for Experimental Evolution (SES) at Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, New York, USA, as early as 1904, although this was never an institution that focused on eugenics (Osiris 2: 225–264 (1986).). When Davenport convinced the Harriman family to fund a Eugenics Record Office (ERO) at Cold Spring Harbor in 1910, the two institutions, under Davenport's general directorship, worked side by side, although on notably different lines of research: the SES on animal and plant genetics and cytogenetics, and the ERO on human heredity and eugenics. In 1916, the CIW took over the management and funding of the ERO, with another healthy bequest from the Harrimans. Eventually, in 1939, they withdrew their support completely when an outside visiting committee reported that the research carried out at the ERO was “worthless from a genetic point of view.” The RF, in its various organizational guises, also supported some eugenics-based activities in the USA, such as the Criminalistic Institute of the City of New York; however, it also focused much of its benefaction in the 1920s and 1930s on several eugenics-orientated Kaiser Wilhelm Institutes in Germany—most notably, Ernst Rüdin's Institute for Psychiatry in Munich. Both foundations also funded a range of individual eugenics projects, international meetings and publications.

Black is also correct that the American and German eugenicists were in close contact with each other, especially after World War I: they were working together in international organizations, following and even reporting on developments in eugenics in each other's countries. The Germans did, in fact, borrow much of their 1933 Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily Defective Offspring (the so-called 'sterilization law') from the model sterilization law drawn up for the various states by Harry H. Laughlin, Superintendent of the ERO, and a number of American eugenicists were impressed with the Nazi eugenical laws after 1933. But all of this has long been known and written about. So, despite the hype claiming that the book would unleash a bombshell of previously unknown findings, there is little that is new in Black's connections between US and German eugenics.

Furthermore, in enumerating these relationships, which are all true enough, Black downplays or often seems to ignore the long history of eugenics and racial hygiene in Germany itself (the two were separate in the early decades of the century but gradually became more synonymous by the 1930s). Absent from his bibliography, for example, is Sheila Faith Weiss's excellent book on Wilhelm Schallmeyer, one of the early German eugenicists who left a lasting imprint on the movement. Germany had a far more active and virulent pro-Nordic and pro-Aryan tradition than most mainstream American eugenics. And although some US eugenicists were Nordic supremacists (Madison Grant and Lothrop Stoddard come immediately to mind), the US movement was not primarily about creating a master race—it was about preventing what appeared to be degeneration of the 'old American stock' owing to the 'un-Darwinian' practices of allowing supposedly hereditarily defective people to reproduce. There was a lot of racism (especially focused on African Americans), nativism and jingoism in the writings of American eugenicists, but it was not primarily couched in the overt language of Aryan/Nordic supremacy.

One could argue that although Black's work might exaggerate the American influence on the Nazis, it nonetheless reveals a more important underlying point: that genetic claims about the inherited basis of individual and group behavioural and social traits, especially when unsupported by rigorous scientific data, are dangerous, even deadly, and that we should use this insight to guard against repeating the same error in our own times. Indeed, we have been inundated in recent years with claims for a genetic basis for everything from alcoholism to criminality, homosexuality, shyness, manic depression and violence. The substrate is there for 'biologizing' our social problems and treating them with supposedly biomedical interventions (such as pharmacogenetics, gene therapy and fertility control). But Black does not, in fact, make much of whatever lessons we might learn, especially from his account. The problem with demonizing the older American eugenicists (many of whom thought they were taking the most modern, scientific and progressive approach to social problems) is that we distance ourselves from them and so can easily fall prey to our own biases today. For all his journalistic pursuit of a righteous cause, Black's conclusions about the present are remarkably tame. He discusses all of the problems that have emerged in recent years that are associated with new genetic technologies: gene therapy, designer babies, sex selection, cloning and so on. By and large, he seems to see geneticists today working for the benefit of all mankind, as opposed to following narrow eugenical interests. But so were most geneticists in the 1920s, and that includes the perception of eugenicists about themselves. Black fails to note that many of the present claims for the genetic basis of social behaviours are no better supported than their counterparts in the past. Yet the widespread belief that such traits are biologically inherited, as frequently sensationalized in the popular press, could easily fall prey to fascist and other demagogical manipulations as we face and debate highly sensitive issues such as health care, the widespread use of behaviour-controlling drugs, and screening for 'violence' and 'criminal' genes. By having made it seem as though Germany imported its eugenics and scientific rationale for genocide, Black's book could easily lead a modern reader to miss the nascent eugenical developments that are occurring within our own society today.

Eugenics: The "Science" of a Death-cult Elite

Eugenics was born as a scientific curiosity in the Victorian age. In 1857 the Supreme Court handed down the Dred Scott decision while it held session at Bedford Springs in Bedford, Pennsylvania. This decision occurred where Dred Scott and his family walked into the Supreme Court as free people and walked out as slaves. But many in government understood the political powers inherent in making slaves and this subconscious power has not changed. Only its methods have changed. Transferring authority from the parent to the state produces profound subservience and slavery into the entire culture. This process has only transformed from overt to covert slave-making. Millions of American families are now experiencing the very same fate as the Scotts, as "family courts" and bureaucratic slave-makers are committing the very same atrocities in eugenics "kangaroo courts." These powers of the slave-makers are often seen as "occult," but are fully explained as subconscious terror programming known for centuries as effective "crowd control" devices. Americans eventually get fed-up with the slave-making of elitist Nazis. Many attribute this pro-slavery Dred Scott decision to be the true onset of the American Civil War.

In 1863, Sir Francis Galton, a cousin of Charles Darwin, theorized that if talented people only married other talented people, the result would be measurably better offspring. At the turn of the last century, Galton's ideas were imported into the United States just as Gregor Mendel's principles of heredity were rediscovered. American eugenic advocates believed with religious fervor that the same Mendelian concepts determining the color and size of peas, corn and cattle also governed the social and intellectual character of man.

In an America demographically reeling from immigration upheaval and torn by post-Reconstruction chaos, race conflict was everywhere in the early twentieth century. Elitists, utopians and so-called "progressives" fused their smoldering race fears and class bias with their desire to make a better world. They reinvented Galton's eugenics into a repressive and racist ideology. The intent: populate the earth with vastly more of their own socio-economic and biological kind--and less or none of everyone else.

The superior species the eugenics movement sought was populated not merely by tall, strong, talented people. Eugenicists craved blond, blue-eyed Nordic types. This group alone, they believed, was fit to inherit the earth. In the process, the movement intended to subtract emancipated Negroes, immigrant Asian laborers, Indians, Hispanics, East Europeans, Jews, dark-haired hill folk, poor people, the infirm and really anyone classified outside the gentrified genetic lines drawn up by American raceologists.

How? By identifying so-called "defective" family trees and subjecting them to lifelong segregation and sterilization programs to kill their bloodlines. The grand plan was to literally wipe away the reproductive capability of those deemed weak and inferior--the so-called "unfit." The eugenicists hoped to neutralize the viability of 10 percent of the population at a sweep, until none were left except themselves.

Eighteen solutions were explored in a Carnegie-supported 1911 "Preliminary Report of the Committee of the Eugenic Section of the American Breeder's Association to Study and to Report on the Best Practical Means for Cutting Off the Defective Germ-Plasm in the Human Population." Point eight was euthanasia.

The most commonly suggested method of eugenicide in America was a "lethal chamber" or public locally operated gas chambers. In 1918, Popenoe, the Army venereal disease specialist during World War I, co-wrote the widely used textbook, Applied Eugenics, which argued, "From an historical point of view, the first method which presents itself is execution… Its value in keeping up the standard of the race should not be underestimated." Applied Eugenics also devoted a chapter to "Lethal Selection," which operated "through the destruction of the individual by some adverse feature of the environment, such as excessive cold, or bacteria, or by bodily deficiency."

Eugenic breeders believed American society was not ready to implement an organized lethal solution. But many mental institutions and doctors practiced improvised medical lethality and passive euthanasia on their own. One institution in Lincoln, Illinois fed its incoming patients milk from tubercular cows believing a eugenically strong individual would be immune. Thirty to forty percent annual death rates resulted at Lincoln. Some doctors practiced passive eugenicide one newborn infant at a time. Others doctors at mental institutions engaged in lethal neglect.

Nonetheless, with eugenicide marginalized, the main solution for eugenicists was the rapid expansion of forced segregation and sterilization, as well as more marriage restrictions. California led the nation, performing nearly all sterilization procedures with little or no due process. In its first twenty-five years of eugenic legislation, California sterilized 9,782 individuals, mostly women. Many were classified as "bad girls," diagnosed as "passionate," "oversexed" or "sexually wayward." At Sonoma, some women were sterilized because of what was deemed an abnormally large clitoris or labia.

In 1933 alone, at least 1,278 coercive sterilizations were performed, 700 of which were on women. The state's two leading sterilization mills in 1933 were Sonoma State Home with 388 operations and Patton State Hospital with 363 operations. Other sterilization centers included Agnews, Mendocino, Napa, Norwalk, Stockton and Pacific Colony state hospitals.

Even the United States Supreme Court endorsed aspects of eugenics. In its infamous 1927 decision, Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote, "It is better for all the world, if instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crime, or to let them starve for their imbecility, society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind…. Three generations of imbeciles are enough." This decision opened the floodgates for thousands to be coercively sterilized or otherwise persecuted as subhuman. Years later, the Nazis at the Nuremberg trials quoted Holmes's words in their own defense.

Only after eugenics became entrenched in the United States was the campaign transplanted into Germany, in no small measure through the efforts of California eugenicists, who published booklets idealizing sterilization and circulated them to German official and scientists.

Hitler studied American eugenics laws. He tried to legitimize his anti-Semitism by medicalizing it, and wrapping it in the more palatable pseudoscientific facade of eugenics. Hitler was able to recruit more followers among reasonable Germans by claiming that science was on his side. While Hitler's race hatred sprung from his own mind, the intellectual outlines of the eugenics Hitler adopted in 1924 were made in America.

During the '20s, Carnegie Institution eugenic scientists cultivated deep personal and professional relationships with Germany's fascist eugenicists. In Mein Kampf, published in 1924, Hitler quoted American eugenic ideology and openly displayed a thorough knowledge of American eugenics. "There is today one state," wrote Hitler, "in which at least weak beginnings toward a better conception [of immigration] are noticeable. Of course, it is not our model German Republic, but the United States."

Hitler proudly told his comrades just how closely he followed the progress of the American eugenics movement. "I have studied with great interest," he told a fellow Nazi, "the laws of several American states concerning prevention of reproduction by people whose progeny would, in all probability, be of no value or be injurious to the racial stock."

Hitler even wrote a fan letter to American eugenic leader Madison Grant calling his race-based eugenics book, The Passing of the Great Race his "bible."

Hitler's struggle for a superior race would be a mad crusade for a Master Race. Now, the American term "Nordic" was freely exchanged with "Germanic" or "Aryan." Race science, racial purity and racial dominance became the driving force behind Hitler's Nazism. Nazi eugenics would ultimately dictate who would be persecuted in a Reich-dominated Europe, how people would live, and how they would die. Nazi doctors would become the unseen generals in Hitler's war against the Jews and other Europeans deemed inferior. Doctors would create the science, devise the eugenic formulas, and even hand-select the victims for sterilization, euthanasia and mass extermination.

During the Reich's early years, eugenicists across America welcomed Hitler's plans as the logical fulfillment of their own decades of research and effort. California eugenicists republished Nazi propaganda for American consumption. They also arranged for Nazi scientific exhibits, such as an August 1934 display at the L.A. County Museum, for the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association.

In 1934, as Germany's sterilizations were accelerating beyond 5,000 per month, the California eugenics leader C. M. Goethe upon returning from Germany ebulliently bragged to a key colleague, "You will be interested to know, that your work has played a powerful part in shaping the opinions of the group of intellectuals who are behind Hitler in this epoch-making program. Everywhere I sensed that their opinions have been tremendously stimulated by American thought.…I want you, my dear friend, to carry this thought with you for the rest of your life, that you have really jolted into action a great government of 60 million people."

That same year, ten years, after Virginia passed its sterilization act, Joseph DeJarnette, superintendent of Virginia's Western State Hospital, observed in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, "The Germans are beating us at our own game."

More than just providing the scientific roadmap, America funded Germany's eugenic institutions. By 1926, Rockefeller had donated some $410,000 -- almost $4 million in 21st-Century money -- to hundreds of German researchers. In May 1926, Rockefeller awarded $250,000 to the German Psychiatric Institute of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, later to become the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Psychiatry. Among the leading psychiatrists at the German Psychiatric Institute was Ernst Rüdin, who became director and eventually an architect of Hitler's systematic medical repression.

Another in the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute's eugenic complex of institutions was the Institute for Brain Research. Since 1915, it had operated out of a single room. Everything changed when Rockefeller money arrived in 1929. A grant of $317,000 allowed the Institute to construct a major building and take center stage in German race biology. The Institute received additional grants from the Rockefeller Foundation during the next several years. Leading the Institute, once again, was Hitler's medical henchman Ernst Rüdin. Rüdin's organization became a prime director and recipient of the murderous experimentation and research conducted on Jews, Gypsies and others.

Beginning in 1940, thousands of Germans taken from old age homes, mental institutions and other custodial facilities were systematically gassed. Between 50,000 and 100,000 were eventually killed.

Leon Whitney, executive secretary of the American Eugenics Society declared of Nazism, "While we were pussy-footing around…the Germans were calling a spade a spade."

A special recipient of Rockefeller funding was the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Anthropology, Human Heredity and Eugenics in Berlin. For decades, American eugenicists had craved twins to advance their research into heredity. The Institute was now prepared to undertake such research on an unprecedented level. On May 13, 1932, the Rockefeller Foundation in New York dispatched a radiogram to its Paris office: JUNE MEETING EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE NINE THOUSAND DOLLARS OVER THREE YEAR PERIOD TO KWG INSTITUTE ANTHROPOLOGY FOR RESEARCH ON TWINS AND EFFECTS ON LATER GENERATIONS OF SUBSTANCES TOXIC FOR GERM PLASM.

At the time of Rockefeller's endowment, Otmar Freiherr von Verschuer, a hero in American eugenics circles, functioned as a head of the Institute for Anthropology, Human Heredity and Eugenics. Rockefeller funding of that Institute continued both directly and through other research conduits during Verschuer's early tenure. In 1935, Verschuer left the Institute to form a rival eugenics facility in Frankfurt that was much heralded in the American eugenic press. Research on twins in the Third Reich exploded, backed up by government decrees. Verschuer wrote in Der Erbarzt, a eugenic doctor's journal he edited, that Germany's war would yield a "total solution to the Jewish problem."

Verschuer had a long-time assistant. His name was Josef Mengele. On May 30, 1943, Mengele arrived at Auschwitz. Verschuer notified the German Research Society, "My assistant, Dr. Josef Mengele (M.D., Ph.D.) joined me in this branch of research. He is presently employed as Hauptsturmführer [captain] and camp physician in the Auschwitz concentration camp. Anthropological testing of the most diverse racial groups in this concentration camp is being carried out with permission of the SS Reichsführer [Himmler]."

Mengele began searching the boxcar arrivals for twins. When he found them, he performed beastly experiments, scrupulously wrote up the reports and sent the paperwork back to Verschuer's institute for evaluation. Often, cadavers, eyes and other body parts were also dispatched to Berlin's eugenic institutes.

Rockefeller executives never knew of Mengele. With few exceptions, the foundation had ceased all eugenic studies in Nazi-occupied Europe before the war erupted in 1939. But by that time the die had been cast. The talented men Rockefeller and Carnegie financed, the institutions they helped found, and the science it helped create took on a scientific momentum of their own.

After the war, eugenics was declared a crime against humanity--an act of genocide. Germans were tried and they cited the California statutes in their defense. To no avail. They were found guilty.

However, Mengele's boss Verschuer escaped prosecution. Verschuer re-established his connections with California eugenicists who had gone underground and renamed their crusade "human genetics." Typical was an exchange July 25, 1946 when Popenoe wrote Verschuer, "It was indeed a pleasure to hear from you again. I have been very anxious about my colleagues in Germany…. I suppose sterilization has been discontinued in Germany?" Popenoe offered tidbits about various American eugenic luminaries and then sent various eugenic publications. In a separate package, Popenoe sent some cocoa, coffee and other goodies.

Verschuer wrote back, "Your very friendly letter of 7/25 gave me a great deal of pleasure and you have my heartfelt thanks for it. The letter builds another bridge between your and my scientific work; I hope that this bridge will never again collapse but rather make possible valuable mutual enrichment and stimulation."

Soon, Verschuer once again became a respected scientist in Germany and around the world. In 1949, he became a corresponding member of the newly formed American Society of Human Genetics, organized by American eugenicists and geneticists.

In the fall of 1950, the University of Münster offered Verschuer a position at its new Institute of Human Genetics, where he later became a dean. In the early and mid-1950s, Verschuer became an honorary member of numerous prestigious societies, including the Italian Society of Genetics, the Anthropological Society of Vienna, and the Japanese Society for Human Genetics.

Human genetics' genocidal roots in eugenics were ignored by a victorious generation that refused to link itself to the crimes of Nazism and by succeeding generations that never knew the truth of the years leading up to war. Now governors of five states, including California have issued public apologies to their citizens, past and present, for sterilization and other abuses spawned by the eugenics movement.

Human genetics became an enlightened endeavor in the late twentieth century. Hard-working, devoted scientists finally cracked the human code through the Human Genome Project. Now, every individual can be biologically identified and classified by trait and ancestry. Yet even now, some leading voices in the genetic world are calling for a cleansing of the unwanted among us, and even a master human species.

There is understandable wariness about more ordinary forms of abuse, for example, in denying insurance or employment based on genetic tests. On October 14, America's first genetic anti-discrimination legislation passed the Senate by unanimous vote. Yet because genetics research is global, no single nation's law can stop the threats.
